Unique Film Will Help Women and Girls Live Healthier Lives

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women.

Kampala Uganda, East Africa – February 9, 2014

On February 6, 2014, Michael Ahabwe Mugerwa a Ugandan activists and founder of ICOD Action Network and Center for Human Rights and Policy Studies, launched a campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for a documentary film KATA (Cut), his new efforts to help end Female Genital Mutilation.

“I am pleased to work to end Female Genital Mutilation in a region where rights of minorities and vulnerable communities are frequently abused but governments take no efforts to stop these rights abuses. I am excited by the prospect of reaching to millions of people through film a to make a difference.” said Michael Ahabwe Mugerwa.

The goal of the KATA film is to expose the dangers of Female Genital Mutilation, give viewers an opportunity meet girls and women in Uganda and Kenya forced to undergo Female Genital Mutilation and those at risk of being forced into this life-threatening ordeal. “I hope that spreading the world worldwide will help generate worldwide efforts to end Female Genital Mutilation East Africa and in other countries where it is still practiced.” Female Genital Mutilation is a violation of a girl’s rights to health, well-being and self-determination, and it can be stopped when communities are informed about the dangers and governments take bold efforts to end it,” said Michael Ahabwe Mugerwa.

The KATA Campaign (http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/kata-ending-female-genital-mutilation) will work in partnership with communities, schools, health service providers, civil society organizations , local governments and other key stakeholders to develop and implement initiatives in their communities with the ultimate goal of stopping Female Genital Mutilation and improving health  of women with health complications because of Female Genital Mutilation. Currently, there are between 8 and 10 million women and girls in the Middle East and in Africa who are at risk of undergoing one form or another of genital cutting and more than 125 million girls and women have been subjected to the ordeal.

“I am excited about working on this unique film to stop Female Genital Mutilation in a region where few men can come forward to even talk about this cruel and life-threatening ordeal that women and girls are forced to go through. I think men must actively take part in ending Female Genital Mutilation. By exposing the dangers of Female Genital Mutilation and assessing our community needs, we can then shape our own plans to completely stop Female Genital Mutilation.” Said Michael Ahabwe Mugerwa
